While the children and I were visiting family in Pennsylvania, we also took a little field trip to visit a sweet couple and their farm. Having grown up on a dairy farm, I value our children getting to experience various farm settings.
The farmer is also a physician, but this was his day off. Under the shade trees, we enjoyed a lunch of hamburgers and sausages made from animals that had been raised on the farm. Dessert was homemade peach ice cream. The peaches were also raised on the farm.
After lunch, we went on a tour. The children got to gather the chicken eggs, see the turkeys that are being raised for Thanksgiving dinner, feed the pigs, and play in the barn. I enjoyed seeing the beautiful flowers and bountiful vegetable gardens. The farmer and his wife grow many common vegetables but also some unusual ones including peanuts and celery. It was also fun to drive around the orchard and fields and see the beautiful view of the mountains in the distance.
We had an enjoyable visit, and the children did not even realize they were on a field trip!
