Hiking in October

The first days of October have been cooler but sunny: perfect weather for hiking in the woods.  Saturday, the whole family hiked through the woods looking for maple trees to mark so we can collect sap for making syrup next year.

Our oldest spent time cutting down a dead tree in preparation for building his cabin.  Our daughter enjoyed collecting wild flowers.  We also gathered some nuts along the way.

Yesterday, our third child and I went for a hike at Kingdom Come State Park.  Most leaves have not changed color yet, but the scenery is still beautiful.

Part way through hiking the Pine Trail, our legs were like jelly due to the steep incline.  We identified quite a few types of plants as we walked.  Look at the massive rhododendrons!

The state park is at a fairly high elevation, so there are some spectacular views.

A beautiful time in the mountains!
